BREEDING SUGGESTIONS FROM ALAN PORTER
JUMP TO
Bandini is a track-record-breaking grade one winner by Fusaichi Pegasus, who is also responsible for current Leading Freshman Sire Roman Ruler. He is out of a half-sister to Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds Stormy Atlantic, and from the family of the great sires Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev.
Bandini is a product of the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross, as is his own sire Fusaichi Pegasus, and other leading sires such as Kingmambo, Distorted Humor, Elusive Quality, Speightstown, Thunder Gulch, Grand Slam and Roman Ruler. Those horses have all done well when bred back over Northern Dancer line mares, and although foals by Bandini out of Northern Dancer line mares would have three crosses of Northern Dancer, those on Bandini’s side of the pedigree would be back in the fourth and fifth generations, and this should not be a negative.
Fusaichi Pegasus himself has sired several of his best stakes winners out of Northern Dancer line mares, successful branches including Vice Regent through Regal Classic and Deputy Minister (including graded stakes winners out of mares by Silver Deputy and Dehere, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Salt Lake); Storm Bird and his son Storm Cat (who would be particularly interesting if brought in through Stormy Atlantic, or sons out of Mr. Prospector mares, such as Tale of the Cat, Storm Creek and Storm Boot, or combined with Mr. Prospector’s family, through Forestry or Forest Wildcat), Nijinsky II (including Caerleon and Baldski), Danzig (including Danehill and Anabaa), Lomond, Night Shift, The Minstrel and Last Tycoon (by Try My Best, a brother to El Gran Senor), Topsider (from the family of Bandini). Bandini should also appreciate mares from the lines of Sadler’s Wells (sire in the U.S. of El Prado) and Nureyev, giving linebreeding to his female line.
Bandini is a Mr. Prospector grandson, and the cross of Mr. Prospector line stallions over Seattle Slew mares has been a very successful one. Fusaichi Pegasus and Roman Ruler are both sires of stakes winners out of mares by A.P. Indy (whose sons Pulpit, Malibu Moon and Mineshaft could work well here) and Fusaichi Pegasus has a stakes winner out of a mare by Seattle Slew’s son, Metfield. This will give inbreeding to Seattle Slew, but two of the best runners by Bandini’s relative Stormy Atlantic are inbred to Seattle Slew.
Mr. Prospector and Dixieland Band (broodmare sire of Bandini) are both very good with Roberto, and we can note that Fusaichi Pegasus has sired stakes winners out of mares by Roberto’s sons Dynaformer and Red Ransom. Looking at other members of the Hail to Reason line, Fusaichi Pegasus also has a stakes winner out of a mare by a son of Halo, who could be brought in through Saint Ballado, Devil’s Bag (Fusaichi Pegasus has a stakes winner out of mare by Rahy, whose dam is a sister to Saint Ballado and Devil’s Bag), and Southern Halo and his son More Than Ready.
Fusaichi Pegasus and Roman Ruler both have stakes winners out of mares from the Hoist the Flag branch of the Ribot line. Roman Ruler is sire of grade one winner Homeboykris out of a mare by Salutely, and Fusaichi Pegasus is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by a son of Alleged.
Fusaichi Pegasus also has three stakes winners out of Never Bend line mares, descending through Mill Reef and Riverman (via his son, Irish River).
It could also be worth reinforcing Bandini’s female line – which traces to Rough Shod II through Horse of the Year Moccasin – by bringing in Apalachee, King Pellinore and Cutlass.
