BREEDING SUGGESTIONS FROM ALAN PORTER

Undefeated in four starts, all at two Cactus Ridge, captured three stakes events by a total margin of 24½ lengths, and he ended his career with an easy win in the Arlington-Washington Futurity (G3).

Cactus Ridge is a grandson of Storm Cat, and a son of Hennessy, also sire of Leading Freshman Sire, Johannesburg. Since Cactus Ridge is a product of the Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross, and stallions bred on that cross are beginning to work well when bred back over Mr. Prospector line mares. Hennessy and his sons have stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Crafty Prospector, Geiger Counter, Gulch, Jade Hunter, Miswaki and Woodman. Storm Cat line sires have also done well over Mr. Prospector through Afleet, Carson City, Fappiano (and sons Cahill Road, Pentelicus, Cryptoclearance, Quiet American, Unbridled and Rubiano), Forty Niner, Gone West, Gulch, Kingmambo and Seeking the Gold.

Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and Storm Cat and his sons have also done well with mares descending from Raise a Native through Exclusive Native (and his son Affirmed), and Alydar. Hennessy has three stakes winners out of mares by Alydar, and a grade one winner out of a mare by Alydar’s son, Saratoga Six, and other sons of Alydar who have promise here include Turkoman, Easy Goer, Alysheba, Strike the Gold, Criminal Type, Jeblar and Wheaton.

Storm Cat line stallions have crossed very well over Seattle Slew line mares. Hennessy has a stakes winner out of a mare by Seattle Slew’s son, Seattle Song, and other Seattle Slew sons that are broodmare sires of Storm Cat line stakes winners are A.P Indy, Capote, General Meeting, Gold Legend and Slewpy.

Storm Cat and his sons have been very successful with Damascus line mares, this cross producing Hennessy’s Champion, Johannesburg, who is out of a mare by Ogygian. Damascus should also work well through Private Account and sons; ;Time For a Change; Timeless Moment (sire of Gilded Time); Eastern Echo; Crusader Sword; and Bailjumper (sire of Skip Away).

The cross of Storm Cat line stallions over Blushing Groom line mares has been an extremely successful one with at least 25 stakes winners, eight of them grade one. Good sources of Blushing Groom will be Rahy, Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run) and Mt. Livermore.

The Storm Cat cross with Ribot line mares has produced 35 stakes winners, including five grade one winners. Likely Ribot line sources include His Majesty (particularly through Pleasant Colony and his sons); Hoist the Flag and sons, including Alleged; and Graustark (including Key to the Mint).
