BREEDING SUGGESTIONS FROM ALAN PORTER

JUMP TO

Ecclesiastic is a multiple graded stakes winner by Pulpit, the leading sire son of A.P. Indy. A three-parts brother to multiple graded stakes winner and grade one performer Teammate, and half-brother to graded stakes winner and grade one performer War Front, he is bred very similarly to Pulpit’s sensational young son Tapit.

Ecclesiastic should be very well-suited by mares from the Northern Dancer line. One obvious source is Danzig, sire of Ecclesiastic’s talented half-brother, War Front. Other branches of Northern Dancer which look promising include Storm Bird through Summer Squall (a half-brother to A.P. Indy), Storm Cat (broodmare sire of four stakes by Pulpit, and particularly good here through Tale of the Cat and Johannesburg, who are from Pulpit’s own family, or Hennessy, broodmare sire of grade one winners by Pulpit and Tapit), Deputy Minister (who has worked with the Pulpit line through Dehere and Silver Deputy), Sadler’s Wells (whose son, El Prado, is broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Tapit), Dixieland Band, Lyphard, Nureyev, El Gran Senor, Topsider, Nijinsky II and The Minstrel. A.P. Indy has also sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Clever Trick, and Pulpit has a stakes winner out of a mare by Wild Again, both by Northern Dancer's fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade.

Ecclesiastic is inbred to Mr. Prospector, but that horse’s close relative, Alydar should work well here. A.P. Indy has sired four stakes winners, two of them grade one out of mares by Alydar, and Pulpit has sired grade one winner Corinthian out of a mare by Easy Goer, a son of Alydar. Pulpit also has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Affirmed, who is from the Exclusive Native branch of the Raise a Native line.

The double of Mr. Prospector suggests that Ecclesiastic might work well with Roberto, who is out of a mare who is closely related to the dam of Mr. Prospector. Sons of Roberto who have already worked under A.P. Indy include Red Ransom, Kris S. (and his son Arch) and Dynaformer. Roberto is a Hail to Reason line horse, and A.P. Indy and his sons have also sired grade one winners out of mares by Turn-to/Hail to Reason descendants Cox's Ridge, Cure the Blues, and from the Halo line, Devil’s Bag (brother to Saint Ballado), Jolie’s Halo, and Southern Halo (sire of More Than Ready).

Pulpit has sired a grade two winner out of a mare by Pleasant Colony, from the His Majesty branch of the Ribot line. It could also be worth considering mares descending from Ribot through Graustark (brother to His Majesty) and Tom Rolfe/Hoist the Flag.

Pulpit also has stakes winners out of mares by Copelan (including grade one winner Purge), Broad Brush (and his son Concern), Wild Again (also broodmare sire of a graded winner by Tapit), Rahy (grade one winner Rutherienne), Summing (from the Prince John line), Cozzene, Lord At War, Valid Appeal and Relaunch. Ecclesiastic should be particularly good with Relaunch (whose sister appears in the pedigree of Ecclesiastic). Sources of Relaunch which particularly appeal include Honour and Glory, Waquoit and Skywalker. Glitterman, a half-brother to the dam of Ecclesiastic’s broodmare sire, Rubiano, might also be good.
