BREEDING SUGGESTIONS FROM ALAN PORTER

JUMP TO

Ecclesiastic is a multiple graded stakes winner by Pulpit, the leading sire son of A.P. Indy. He is three-parts-brother to multiple graded stakes winner and grade one performer Teammate, and half-brother to graded stakes winner and grade one performer, War Front.

Ecclesiastic should be very well-suited by mares from the Northern Dancer line. One obvious source is Danzig, sire of Ecclesiastic’s talented half-brother, War Front. Other branches of Northern Dancer which look promising include Storm Bird through Summer Squall (a half-brother to A.P. Indy) Storm Cat (broodmare sire of three stakes by Pulpit, and particularly good her through Tale of the Cat and Johannesburg, who are from Pulpit’s own family) Deputy Minister (whose son, Dehere, is broodmare sire of a graded winner by Pulpit), Dixieland Band, Lyphard, Nureyev, El Gran Senor, Topsider and The Minstrel. A.P. Indy has also sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Clever Trick, and Pulpit has a stakes winner out of a mare by Wild Again, both by Northern Dancer's fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade.

Ecclesiastic is inbred to Mr. Prospector, but that horse’s close relative, Alydar should work well here. A.P. Indy has sired four stakes winners, two of them grade one out of mares by Alydar, and Pulpit has sired grade one winner Corinthian out of a mare by Easy Goer, a son of Alydar. Pulpit also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Affirmed, who is from the Exclusive Native branch of the Raise a Native line.

The double of Mr. Prospector suggests that Ecclesiastic might work well with Roberto, who is out of a mare who is closely related to the dam of Mr. Prospector. Sons of Roberto who have already worked under A.P. Indy are Red Ransom, Kris S. and Dynaformer. Roberto is a Hail to Reason line horse, and A.P. Indy has also sired grade one winners out of mares by Turn-to/Hail to Reason descendants Cox's Ridge and Cure the Blues.

Pulpit has sired a grade two winner out of a mare by Pleasant Colony, from the His Majesty branch of the Ribot line. It could also be worth considering mares descending from Ribot through Graustark (brother to His Majesty) and Tom Rolfe/Hoist the Flag.

Pulpit also has stakes winners out of mares by Copelan (including grade one winner Purge), Broad Brush, Rahy (grade one winner Rutherienne), Summing (from the Prince John line), Cozzene, Lord At War and Valid Appeal. Valid Appeal is an In Reality line stallion, and Ecclesiastic should be good with In Reality through Relaunch (who has a sister in the pedigree of Ecclesiastic). Sources of Relaunch which particularly appeal include Honour and Glory, Waquoit and Skywalker. Glitterman, a half-brother to the dam of Eccliastic’s broodmare sire, Rubiano, might also be good
