BREEDING SUGGESTIONS FROM ALAN PORTER
JUMP TO
A beautifuly-bred stakes winner, FULL MANDATE is by A.P. Indy out of Deputy Minister’s grade one winning daughter, Clear Mandate. With his first runner from his crop two-year-olds, he is already sire of track-record-breaking stakes winner Thoroughly.
Full Mandate free of the Mr. Prospector line, and mares from this sire line have supplied the dams of nearly 50 A.P. Indy line stakes winners. In addition to Mr. Prospector himself, sons of Mr. Prospector who are broodmare sires of stakes winners by A.P. Indy include Fappiano, Forty Niner, Seeking the Gold, Machiavellian, Afleet, Silver Ghost, Allen’s Prospect and Distinctive Pro. The cross with Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector A.P. Indy has been particularly good and there are A.P. Indy line stakes winners out of mares by Fappiano sons Quiet American, Rubiano, Roy and Unbridled. A.P. Indy has also sired four stakes winners, two of them grade one out of mares by Alydar, like Mr. Prospector, a son of Raise a Native.
Full Mandate is out of a Deputy Minister mare, and so is an example of the cross of A.P. Indy over Northern Dancer line mares. There are nearly 50 stakes winners by A.P. Indy and his sons out of Northern Dancer line mares, and crossing Full Mandate back over mares by Northern Dancer line stallions should work well. Branches of Northern Dancer which have worked well with A.P. Indy line stallions include Nijinsky II, Danzig, Lyphard, Dixieland Band, Nureyev and El Gran Senor. A.P. Indy and his sons have also worked well over mares descending from Northern Dancer’s son, Storm Bird, through Storm Cat (sire of a graded stakes winner out of the dam of Full Mandate) and Summer Squall (a half-brother to A.P. Indy, and broodmare sire of Champion Stevie Wonderboy, who is by a son of A.P. Indy). Inbreeding to the broodmare sire of a stallion is a pattern which can often work well, and Full Mandate could work well over mares by Deputy Minister sons such as Dehere, Salt Lake, Awesome Again, Touch Gold, Silver Deputy and Deputy Commander. A.P. Indy has also had a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Clever Trick, who is by Northern Dancer's fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade.
The cross of A.P. Indy over mares from the Turn-to/Hail to Reason line has been a less prolific one, but has produced some top class individuals. His grade one winner Stephen Got Even is out of a mare by Cox's Ridge. Grade one winner Golden Missile is out of a mare by Cure the Blues (by Stop the Music). There are also A.P. Indy line stakes winners descending from Turn-to and Hail to Reason through Roberto, Halo and Lord Avie (by Lord Gaylord, a son of Sir Gaylord).
The cross of A.P. Indy and his sons over Ribot line stallions has produced three grade one winners. There are stakes winners on this cross out of mares by Pleasant Colony and his son, Pleasant Tap; Cormorant; A.P. Indy has also sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Ribot's grandson, Hoist the Flag (by Tom Rolfe), and there is a grade one winner by a son of A.P. Indy out of a mare by Key to the Mint (by Graustark).
Full Mandate’s juvenile stakes winner Thoroughly is out of a mare by Slewacide, a son of A.P. Indy’s sire, Seattle Slew. Both A.P. Indy and Slewacide combine Seattle Slew and Buckpasser, which suggests other Seattle Slew sons with this formula, such as Slew o’ Gold, Fast Play and Leestown.
