BREEDING SUGGESTIONS FROM ALAN PORTER

Multiple grade one winner Hat Trick was Champion Sprinter in Japan, and also defeated an outstanding international field in the Hong Kong Mile (G1).
Hat Trick is by Horse of the Year Sunday Silence. One of the greatest sires of the last 50 years, Sunday Silence now has at least seven sons who have sired grade one winners. Hat Trick’s dam is the top-class juvenile and sprinter, Tricky Code, winner of the Santa Ynez Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2) and Miesque Stakes, and placed in five other graded stakes including the Oak Leaf Stakes (G1).
Mares from the Northern Dancer line have supplied nearly 50% of the stakes winners sired by Sunday Silence and his sons, and one would look for Northern Dancer to be the strongest cross for Hat Trick, whose pedigree is free of this strain.
European and U.S. Northern Dancer line broodmare sires who have produced stakes winners for Sunday Silence and his sons include Lyphard (and sons Alzao, Al Nasr ), Nijinsky II (and sons Caerleon, Royal Academy and Whiskey Road, the sire of Strawberry Road), Dayjur and Danehill (by Danzig), Deputy Minister, Dixieland Band, Sadler’s Wells (and his son In the Wings), Fairy King, Night Shift, Last Tycoon (by Try My Best), Storm Bird (and his son Storm Cat), Nureyev (and his son, Theatrical) and Be My Guest.
Sunday Silence has also done well with Raise a Native line mares, and Raise a Native is also good with Hat Trick’s maternal grandsire, Lost Code, who carries Raise a Native’s genetic relative, Restless Native. From the Mr. Prospector branch or Raise a Native, there are Sunday Silence line stakes winners out of mares by Afleet, Miswaki, Woodman (and his son, Hector Protector) and Mining (all bred on the same cross as Seeking the Gold), Machiavellian (giving inbreeding to Halo), Conquistador Cielo, Gulch, Kingmambo and Zafonic (by Gone West). Hat Trick should also be well-suited by mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Fappiano, and particularly those carrying Fappiano and In Reality, such as Unbridled, Unbridled’s Song, Cahill Road, Pentelicus and Rubiano. There are three stakes winners out of mares by Alydar and one out of a mare by his son Alysheba. There are two stakes winners out of mares by Affirmed (by Exclusive Native).
Other broodmare sires and broodmare sire lines which have supplied the dams of Sunday Silence line graded stakes include Dr. Devious (by Ahonoora), Law Society (by Alleged, by Hoist the Flag), Grey Sovereign (through Caro and Kenmare), Bold Ruler (through Bold Bidder, What a Pleasure, Raja Baba and What Luck), Kris (by Sharpen Up), Shirley Heights (by Mill Reef) and Sir Ivor (good with Halo).
Hat Trick traces in tail-female line to a sister to War Relic. This means he could also be suited by mares descending from In Reality (inbred to War Relic) through such sons as Relaunch (sire of Honour and Glory, Skywalker and Cee’s Tizzy; grandsire of Bertrando and Tiznow) and Valid Appeal (broodmare sire of Valid Wager and Valid Expectations). Another War Relic line horse, Olden Times might work well here. Great Above is bred on a reverse cross to In Reality, and could be brought in through Holy Bull or Housebuster.
