BREEDING SUGGESTIONS FROM ALAN PORTER

A $2,500,000 yearling, Pavarotti is a stakes winning son of A.P. Indy, and is half-brother to grade one winning sprinter, Snow Ridge.
Like A.P. Indy’s standout sons, Pulpit, Malibu Moon, Mineshaft and Bernardini, Pavarotti is out of a Mr. Prospector line mare. The only Horse of the Year by Leading Sire A.P. Indy, Mineshaft is already a stakes sire with his first crop. Pavarotti should do well when bred back to Mr. Prospector line mare. Interesting branches of that line to use here include Seeking the Gold, Miswaki and Mining, who are all bred on the same cross as Pavarotti’s broodmare sire, Woodman; Fappiano (including through Quiet American is broodmare sire of A.P. Indy’s Champion, Bernardini, and Unbridled, broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Pulpit) as well as Forty Niner, Machiavellian, Afleet, Silver Ghost, Rubiano and Distinctive Pro. A.P. Indy has also sired four stakes winners, two of them grade one out of mares by Alydar, a genetic relative to Mr. Prospector, and therefore a strain which should work really well here.
A.P. Indy has also done extremely well over mares descending from the other great sire line of the current era, that of Northern Dancer, and Pavarotti is half-brother to grade one winner Snow Ridge, who is by Tabasco Cat, a son of Storm Cat. Storm Cat’s sire, Storm Bird, could also be brought in through Summer Squall, a half-brother to A..P. Indy. Other branches of the Northern Dancer line which have produced major stakes winners for A.P. Indy include Deputy Minister, Dixieland Band, Nijinsky II, Lyphard, Nureyev, Danzig, El Gran Senor. A.P. Indy has also sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Clever Trick, who is by Northern Dancer's fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade.
A.P. Indy has sired graded stakes winners out of mares by Pleasant Colony and his son, Pleasant Tap. Pleasant Colony is by the Ribot stallion, His Majesty, and Mingun's half-brother, Kingmambo, also has two graded stakes winners out of His Majesty mares. A.P. Indy has also sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Ribot's grandson, Hoist the Flag (by Tom Rolfe), and Kingmambo has a grade one winner out of a mare by Hoist the Flag's son, Alleged.
A.P. Indy has a grade one winner out of a mare from the Turn-to line, by Cox's Ridge, and a grade one winner from the Hail to Reason branch of that line, out of a mare by Cure the Blues (by Stop the Music). A.P. Indy line stallions are also beginning to work well over Hail to Reason through Roberto, with his sons Red Ransom, Kris S. and Dynaformer all appearing as broodmare sirs of A.P. Indy line stakes winners.
A.P. Indy has sired graded stakes winners out of mares by Pleasant Colony and his son, Pleasant Tap. Pleasant Colony is by the Ribot stallion, His Majesty, and A.P. Indy has also sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Ribot's grandson, Hoist the Flag (by Tom Rolfe), mares by Private Account and his sons could also interest here, giving inbreeding to the mare Playmate and her sister Numbered Account. Any other La Troienne strains should be a help ingeneral.
