Salute the Sarge is a multiple graded stakes-winning and grade one performing two-year-old. He is by Forest Wildcat, one of Storm Cat’s most prolific stakes siring sons, and now a successful sire of sires, with two graded stakes siring sons in 2009.
Salute the Sarge is bred on a Storm Cat/Mr. Prospector cross, but should work well when bred back over Mr. Prospector line mares. Forest Wildcat has done particularly well with mares from the Fappiano branch of the Mr. Prospector line, including Unbridled and his brother Cahill Road, their three-parts brother Pentelicus, and Quiet American. Forest Wildcat also has stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Forty Niner (and his son Coronado’s Quest), Smart Strike, Gone West, Miswaki (and his son Black Tie Affair), Seeking the Gold, Thunder Gulch (by Gulch), Two Punch and Afleet. Forest Wildcat’s brilliant grandson, D’Funnybone, is out of a mare by Woodman. Salute the Sarge might also do well with mares by Machiavellian and his son Street Cry. Forest Wildcat also has stakes winners out of mares descending from Raise a Native through Affirmed (by Exclusive Native) and Raised Socially. It could also be worth trying Salute the Sarge with mares descending from Raise a Native through Alydar.
Forest Wildcat has been extremely successful with mares carrying Bold Ruler. Salute the Sarge is half-brother to a stakes winner by A. P. Indy (by Seattle Slew), and Forest Wildcat has a stakes winner out of a mare by the same horse. There are also Forest Wildcat stakes winners out of mares descending from Seattle Slew through Metfield and General Meeting. Other branches of Bold Ruler that have produced stakes winners when crossed under Forest Wildcat include Spectacular Bid, Secretariat (out of a mare by D’Accord) and Fit to Fight (by Chieftain).
Salute the Sarge is half-brother to a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Cherokee Run, and there is a Forest Wildcat stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire, Runaway Groom (by Blushing Groom). Storm Cat has done well with Blushing Groom in general, and Forest Wildcat also has a stakes winner out a mare by Rahy who should work well here.
The cross of Storm Cat line horses over mares from the Roberto line has been working well, and Forest Wildcat has stakes winners out of mares by Roberto sons Red Ransom and Darby Creek Road (closely related to Dynaformer). Kris S. is another branch of the Roberto line that might work here. Roberto is from the Turn-to/Hail to Reason line, and other broodmare sires from the line that have worked with Forest Wildcat include Cure the Blues (by Stop the Music), Lord Avie and Cox’s Ridge.
Like most Storm Cat line stallions Forest Wildcat has enjoyed success when bred to Ribot line mares. This includes stakes winners out of mares by Key to the Mint (by Graustark), and Cormorant and Pleasant Colony (by His Majesty).
Storm Cat line stallions have done well with Damascus line mares, and Forest Wildcat has stakes winners out of mares from this line by Time For a Change, Gilded Time and Cutlass. It would also be worth considering mares from the Private Account branch of this line.
Even though Forest Wildcat is a Northern Dancer line stallion, he has enjoyed success when crossed back over mares from this sire line. This includes stakes winners out of mares by Theatrical and Zilzal (both by Nureyev), Magesterial, French Deputy and Silver Deputy (both by Deputy Minister), annd Regal Classic (by Vice Regent). From the Icecapade branch of the Nearctic line, Forest Wildcat has a stakes winner out of a mare by Phone Trick (by Clever Trick).
