A grade one winning son of Unbridled’s Song, Songandaprayer is off to a sensational start with six stakes winners, four of them graded, from his first crop.
Songandaprayer is free of Northern Dancer, and there are several Northern Dancer strains which appear to have considerable potential here. He has already sired the brilliant sprinter Songster out of a mare by French Deputy (by Deputy Minister), and Deputy Minister line mares have been very good with Unbridled and Unbridled’s Song in general.
Unbridled and Unbridled’s Song have both done very well with Storm Bird line mares, particularly with Storm Cat, and Songandaprayer already has a stakes placed horse out of a mare by a son of Storm Bird. Other branches of Northern Dancer to work well with Unbridled and Unbridled’s Song include Nijinsky II, Danzig, Nureyev, Lyphard, The Minstrel, Magesterial and El Gran Senor
Songandaprayer’s brilliant but ill-fated dual two-year-old graded stakes winner, What a Song, is out of a mare by Tough Knight, a member of the Never Bend branch of the Nasrullah sire line. What a Song’s dam is also inbred to another Nasrullah son, Bold Ruler. Another branch of the Bold Ruler line which has produced a stakes winner for Unbridled’s Song is that of Bold Ruckus. It’s interesting to note that this reflects a trend also apparent for Montbrook, a very successful sire from the immediate family of Songandaprayer, who has done extremely well with mares carrying Nasrullah through Never Bend and Bold Ruler.
Songandaprayer’s record-breaking graded stakes winner He’s Got Grit, is also out of a mare from the Nasrullah sire line. His dam is by With Approval, a son of Caro, and He’s Got Grit is inbred to both Caro and to Bold Ruler’s grandson, Well Decorated. This also suggests that Caro through Cozzene, Dr. Carter and Siberian Express (sire of In Excess and grandsire of Indian Charlie) might work well. Unbridled’s Song also appears to be developing an affinity for mares from the Blushing Groom branch of the Nasrullah line. He already has a graded stakes winner out of a Rahy mare, a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Housebuster, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Housebuster’s sire, Mt. Livermore. Unbridled’s Song also has a stakes winner out of a mare descending from Nasrullah through Olympio (by Naskra).
Nasrullah’s three-parts-brother Royal Charger, is most frequently found in North America through Turn-to. Unbridled’s Song has three stakes winners, one graded, out of mares descending from Turn-to’s son, Sir Gaylord (via Sir Ivor, Lord Avie and Drone), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Turn-to’s grandson, Halo. Mares by Stop the Music, and particularly his son, Cure the Blues, should also be interesting.
Songandaprayer is a grandson of Unbridled, and a great-grandson of Fappiano, and this male line has a history of working very well with mares carrying In Reality. Unbridled’s Song has stakes winners out mares by In Reality sons Valid Appeal (grade one winner Splendid Blended) and Taylor’s Falls (grade one winner Unbridled Elaine), a stakes winner out of a mare by a son of the In Reality sire, Relaunch, and a graded stakes winner out of mare by In Reality himself.
Songandaprayer is a Mr. Prospector line stallion, but Mr. Prospector will be back in the fifth generation of his foals, and is here through Mr. Prospector’s very untypical son, Fappiano. This gives the possibility of Songandaprayer working back over Mr. Prospector line mares. In fact he has already has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by West By West (by Gone West) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Tactical Advantage (by Forty Niner). Another Raise a Native line which could work here is that of Alydar (broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Unbridled’s Song, and of Champion Anees, by Unbridled).
Songandaprayer also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Overskate (a son of Nodouble, from the Star Kingdom line).
