Track-record breaking Soto is a graded stakes winner at two and three, and a winner of five of six starts. He is by Champion Two-Year-Old and Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds Dehere, one of the most important sons of Deputy Minister.
Soto is a Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector cross, and there are a number of broodmare sire lines which have worked with both those strains. It has proved effective to cross such stallions back over Mr. Prospector. For Soto, particularly good sources include Fappiano (whose son Rubiano is broodmare sire of Dehere’s standout, Take Charge Lady), Forty Niner and Gone West, who have been successful with Dehere, as well as Conquistador Cielo, Miswaki, Seeking the Gold and Woodman.
Another Raise a Native source who would be good here Alydar. Who is a genetic relative to Mr. Prospector and who combines well with him. There are two stakes winners by Dehere out of Alydar line mares, and he can be brought in through Saratoga Six, Easy Goer, Alysheba, Turkoman, Criminal Type and Jeblar. A similarly-bred horse who is broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Dehere is Raise a Cup. It could also be worth considering Raise a Native through Exclusive Native (who is from the family of Deputy Minsiter) and his son, Affirmed.
Deputy Minister and Mr. Prospector have also both done well with Seattle Slew line mares, and Dehere has stakes winners out of mares by Seattle Slew and his son, Slew o’Gold. Other branches of the Bold Ruler sire line might do well here, notably Bold Ruckus, a horse who has been extremely good with Deputy Minister line sires.The Deputy Minister/Blushing Groom cross has been a very successful one, and has provided three stakes winners for Dehere. Blushing Groom’s son, Mt. Livermore, and Mt. Livermore’s son, Housebuster, have particularly strong appeal.
Dehere’s second dam is by Damascus, but he has done well with mares which give inbreeding to that strain. Timeless Moment and his son, Gilded Time, might be particularly good representatives of the Damascus line. Soto carries the strain of In Reality through his broodmare sire, Crafty Prospector. There are nine stakes winners with In Reality inbreeding where one strain is through Crafty Prospector, and Dehere has a stakes winner out of mare by In Reality’s son, Relaunch.
It is also possible to try Northern Dancer inbreeding with Soto. Dehere has sired four stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II, and Soto should also particularly like Northern Dancer/Secretariat crosses such as Storm Cat and sons, Summer Squall, Chief’s Crown and Secreto. Other strains we can note as having produced stakes winners for Dehere, and which might go well here are Ribot, through Graustark, His Majesty or Hoist the Flag; Cox’s Ridge; Grey Dawn II and Wild Again.
