Leading Freshman Sire Successful Appeal is already sire of l2 stakes winners – five graded – and a total of 21 stakes performers in his first three crops.
A graded stakes winner at two, three and four years, and five times successful in graded stakes company, Successful Appeal is one of the most accomplished sons of the prolific Valid Appeal, a son of the breed-shaping In Reality. In addition, he is out of a sister to multiple graded stakes winner Suave Prospect.
Although he is out of a Mr. Prospector line mare, Successful Appeal has made a tremendous start with mares which give inbreeding to Mr. Prospector. Successful Appeal’s son, Closing Argument, a graded stakes winner who also ran second in the Kentucky Derby (G1) is out of a mare by Mr. Greeley, a son of Gone West, which suggests that it could well be worth trying mares by other sons of Gone West such as Elusive Quality, Grand Slam and West By West.
Lunarpal, who swept the Kentucky spring juvenile events is out of a mare by Quiet American, a son of Fappiano. Fappiano is out of a mare by Dr. Fager, a strain which has historically enjoyed great success with Successful Appeal’s grandsire, In Reality. This suggests other Fappiano line stallions such as Unbridled, Cahill Road, Cryptoclearance, Pentelicus, Roy and Rubiano might do well.
Successful Appeal’s multiple stakes winning Punch Appeal is out of a mare descending from Mr. Prospector through Two Punch, the sire of Smoke Glacken. We can also note that Punch Appeal’s dam is bred on very similar lines to Mr. Prospector’s son, Crafty Prospector.
Successful Appeal also has two stakes horses with second dams by the Mr. Prospector’s son, Distinctive Pro. Successful Appeal’s dam is a product of the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross, so it should particularly pay to look for Mr. Prospector through daughters of stallions which repeat that cross, or through mares which are themselves products of a Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross.
Successful Appeal is free of many of the strains which have worked particularly well with Valid Appeal and his sons. One of the most outstanding is that of Hail to Reason, who is already in the male line of the dam of a Successful Appeal grade one winner Appealing Zophie (out of a mare by Hawkster, by Silver Hawk, a son of Roberto). Successful Appeal has sired two stakes winners out of Diablo mares (by Devil’s Bag, by Halo). This suggests other Halo line mares, particularly through Devil’s Bag’s brother, Saint Ballado. The Valid Appeal line has also worked over Hail to Reason through Mr. Leader, Stop the Music and Proud Clairon and his son, Proud Birdie (sire of a stakes winner out of the granddam of Successful Appeal). Hail to Reason’s sire, Turn-to has also worked via Cox’s Ridge.
The strain of Bold Ruler has also shone with Valid Appeal. Bold Ruler strains which are among the most successful here are Bold Bidder (through his sons Cannonade and Rexson), Chieftain (and his son Fit to Fight), Secretariat, What a Pleasure and Raja Baba (through his son, Well Decorated). Bold Ruler is a son of Nasrullah, and another strain of Nasrullah, that of Never Bend, has also done well here, notably through Iron Ruler and Distinctive.
The In Reality line has combined well with Prince John, and Successful Appeal has a stakes winner out of a mare by Meadowlake, who descends from Prince John through Hold Your Peace and Speak John. Valid Appeal demonstrated an affinity with Damascus, particularly through Cutlass and Timeless Moment (sire of Gilded Time) and Successful Appeal has sired graded stakes winner Accountforthegold, out of a mare by Damascus son, Private Account, and also a stakes winner out of a mare by Private Terms, a son of Private Account. Successful Appeal has also sired a stakes winner out of a mare from his own In Reality, sire line, via Known Fact. Other strains which appeal here include Ack Ack, Dr. Fager, Nodouble and Alydar.
