Zavata was bred for speed, and that is what he displayed throughout his career, winning the Tremont Stakes (G3), by 6¼ lengths and Saratoga Special (G2) by 7¼ lengths at two, and the Amsterdam Stakes (G2) by 5¼ lengths at three.
By brilliant sprinter and important speed influence, Phone Trick, Zavata is from the immediate family of grade one winner and successful sire, Dixie Union, and famed tap-root mare, Fall Aspen.
Zavata has a third dam by Mr. Prospector, and that should entice Mr. Prospector line mares. There are Phone Trick line stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Conquistador Cielo, Crafty Prospector, Forty Niner, Machiavellian, Miswaki, Procida and Two Punch. It is also worth noting Allen’s Prospect, a close relative to the third dam of Zavata. This pedigree should also be suited by mares descending from Mr. Prospector’s genetic relative, Alydar.(with Saratoga Six particularly appealing). Other branches of the Raise a Native line to produce Phone Trick line stakes winners are Majestic Prince (through Coastal and Wavering Monarch, a son of Majestic Light) and Exclusive Native (through Premiership).
Phone Trick is a grandson of Icecapade, a three-quarters genetic relative to Northern Dancer, so Northern Dancer line stallions are strongly indicated. There are Phone Trick line stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II (out of mares by Baldski, Greinton and Encino), Be My Guest, Danzig (and his sons Danehill and Polish Navy), Deputy Minister (out of a mare by French Deputy), Sadler’s Wells, The Minstrel, Topsider, Sovereign Dancer (out of a mare by Gate Dancer) and Try My Best (out of a mare by Last Tycoon).
Phone Trick and his sons have demonstrated an affinity for a wide range of Bold Ruler line mares. This includes stakes winners out of mares by Raja Baba (and his sons El Baba and Royal Ski), and descending from Bold Bidder (out of a mare by Caveat), Boldnesian (via Seattle Slew and Super Concorde), Chieftain, Dewan, What a Pleasure (out of a mare by Foolish Pleasure), Bold Forbes and Secretariat (out of a mare by General Assembly).
Phone Trick and his sons have done very well with mares carrying Buckpasser, either through the male line of the mare (where possible broodmare sires include Silver Buck and his son, Silver Charm; Buckaroo, sire of Spend a Buck, Montbrook and Lite the Fuse; Bucksplasher; Buckfinder; Norcliffe sire of Groovy and At the Threshold, grandsire of Lil E Tee; L’Enjoleur; and State Dinner) or elsewhere in the pedigree. Other strains which could do well here are Damascus (particularly through Private Account and sons) and Ribot through Tom Rolfe, His Majesty or Graustark.
